Missouri Libertarian Party MembersMembers of the Missouri Libertarian Pary work hard for the cause of liberty. There are three awards which recognize these efforts. Karl Wetzel AwardThe Karl Wetzel Award is the most notable award given out by the Missouri Libertarian Party. Karl Wetzel was a Libertarian Party activist, candidate and state treasurer who suffered a massive heart attack in 2000, leaving no heirs. His $50k life insurance proceeds were split between the National Libertarian Party and State Libertarian Party, while his $17k 401(k) with no beneficiary listed went to the state. Champions of FreedomThe Champions of Freedom awards are given to those Missouri Libertarians who have made significant contributions towards the cause of liberty in the previous year.
Missouri Libertarian Party 2008 Award RecipientsKarl Wetzel AwardA special award named for the late Karl Wetzel was awarded to John Schultz of Columbia. John was elected Missouri LP Secretary in 2007 and serves as the Boone County LP Chair. He ran for State Representative in 2002, helped organize numerous events over the years and stays on top of local issues in Boone County. Champions of FreedomMichael Hurley, former State Chair, Cass County LP Chair, a three time candidate for State Representative and candidate for the US Congress in 1988. Erik Buck, three time candidate for US Congress. Bill Wayne, long time committeeman, local candidate and candidate for State Representative. Jim Givens, former Missouri LP State Chair. Kevin Babcock, four time candidate for State Representative and for US Congress twice.
